Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands, located off the coast of Africa.  In a GoNOMAD story writer Tina Benitez described  this capital city as looking ‘a little like Miami.’

There are 900,000 people living on Tenerife it contains about 43% of all the population of the other islands, that include Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.  For a 2014 Tenerife holiday, why not dive in to the Canaries for a new and different cold weather getaway.

One thing that Tenerife is known for is that is the site of the worst airline disaster in history. 583 people died when two 747s collided on a runway. But it was a problem at the main airport that sent the two behemoths to the same airport trying to use one runway at the same time.

Puerto de la Cruz

In the northern city of Puerto de la Cruz, the hotels outnumber apartments and beaches are covered in volcanic sand. The  palm tree-drenched tourist town is a mecca for a good night out, getting an introduction to the island and sampling some traditional Canarian cuisine.

Most meals begin with tapas starters and end with meat — beef, rabbit, goat or pork — or fish paired with papas arrugadas, salty mini potatoes with a red paprika and green coriander mojo sauces.
